On the evening of March 16th, the Wabash Middle High School auditorium was filled with pride as we gathered to recognize eight exceptional students at our school board meeting. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Kathy Swan Awards that were established in 2006—a milestone dedicated to those who embody the spirit of "doing the right thing" when no one is watching. #TheApacheWay
The Kathy Swan Award is not a typical academic or athletic trophy. It was established two decades ago to honor the memory of Kathy Swan, a beloved staff member who was tragically lost in a plane crash. Kathy was known throughout our district as a fierce advocate for the "quiet heroes"—students who show up every day, work hard, and maintain a positive attitude without seeking the spotlight.
Unlike other honors, students cannot apply for this award. Instead, they are hand-selected by teachers who have observed their consistent character, resilience, and kindness throughout the school year.
We are proud to announce the students from each grade level who were nominated by their teachers for their outstanding character:
5th Grade - Elliott Culwell
6th Grade - Elle Cogdell
7th Grade - Layla Green
8th Grade - Avery Teel
9th Grade - Avionna Osborne
10th Grade - Martha Steller
11th Grade - Jasmin Garcia
12th Grade - Kenyen Weeks
To our recipients: thank you for being a good example for your peers and for carrying forward Kathy’s legacy of quiet excellence. To the families and teachers who support these students, thank you for nurturing the character traits that make our community strong.
Congratulations to all of our 2026 Kathy Swan Award winners! 🧡🖤
