OJ Neighbours Elementary believes character starts early. On April 6th, we had the distinct honor of celebrating four of our elementary "quiet heroes" at the school board meeting held at OJN. As previously noted in our last blog, this year is particularly special as it marks the 20th anniversary of the Kathy Swan Awards, a tradition that reminds us all that kindness and hard work are the ultimate forms of success.
The Kathy Swan Award is a heartfelt tribute to a former staff member who saw the best in every child. Kathy Swan was a champion for students who didn't necessarily seek out the spotlight, but who made a difference every day through their positive attitudes and steady effort. At the elementary level, this means recognizing the students who, despite some setbacks, are the first to help a classmate, diligent in their work, and the most consistent in doing the right thing just because it’s right. #TheApacheWay
These students didn't ask for this recognition; they were noticed by their teachers for the simple, powerful ways they improve our school culture every single day. Each student’s teacher provided a touching testimony about each student and how they demonstrated all the characteristics that Kathy Swan valued.
We are thrilled to introduce our 2026 OJ Neighbours Kathy Swan Award recipients:
1st Grade – Keenan Cole
2nd Grade – Reece Burruss
3rd Grade – Daniel Wilcox
4th Grade – Dawson Gibson
To our young winners: thank you for leading by example and showing us all what it means to have a big heart. You have learned to do the right thing, even when it’s hard. Your teachers and families are so proud of the people you are becoming.
Congratulations to our 2026 winners for carrying on Kathy’s legacy with such bright smiles!
