As of Friday, February 22nd, Wabash City Schools has missed 7 days due to weather related issues. Delaying and cancelling schools due to weather is a complicated process that involves current and forecasted weather and road conditions, but we always place student safety first. Historically, Wabash City Schools has been a city school and we have been able to avoid cancellations due to our small geographically footprint; however, due to an out of district population of 20 percent, we have several county routes to consider in making our decision.
The Indiana Department of Education has provided school systems the ability to waive certain weather related days based on the cumulative number of days missed. After the 5th cancelled day, school corporations will receive waivers for odd numbered cancellations, (7, 9, 11, etc.). This past Wednesday, February 20th, was our 7th day missed this year. On Wednesday afternoon we had applied for a waiver and by Thursday morning, the Department notified us that we had been granted a waiver for Wednesday, February 20th (our 7th day missed).
Currently, we have made up 2 of our 6 days: February 4 and 18th. We are still scheduled to make up days on May 24th, 28th, 29th and 30th.
